In Nepal the government has tried to reduce the use of plastic bags and make a plastic-free environment. Through the media, the government has tried to make people aware about the effects and hazards that plastic bags can cause to the environment.

As the saying goes, ‘Charity starts from the home’. In the same way, I took the initiative to make people near my home and my family members aware regarding the effects of plastic bags.

Before they used to burn plastic. Now they have started to separate garbage. They have started to keep plastic aside to sell it. Plastic is reused, and people are happy that they get money from the plastic which they used to burn before.

The environment is a concern for everyone, and all of us together can bring change.

Normally when a complex is planned to construct a multistory housing apartment in a compact city like Dhaka, the rich ecology there are left unattended and unwatered for the long period between the agreement signing (ecology owner & construction company) and authority approval obtaining- normally 12 to 18 months.

Most of the plants die in the mean time. Slum dwellers collect some for fuel wood. The left over are bulldogged and thrown away by the company while start construction.

But in this unique initiative of a tiny Farmers’ Research Institute Krisoker Sor (Farmers’ Voice), we were courage enough to take the initiative of saving the +95 species of plants, trees and herbs.

We had the timeframe of 18 months. But it was extended luckily for more 4 months. Through the whole period, all the necessary plans, activities, social- happial- economic- power issues resolving, great care for the ecology, nurturing, grafting, root compaction limiting within a close circular earth, sapling preparation, documentation and plant’s response to our actions were done mostly accurate and where it was not possible- there we failed. But with the economic failure of saving some trees (mostly biggest ones), all are convinced with the wonderful result. Nearly 100% plant species are temporarily relocated on 6 decimal of land. All are flowering, fruiting, growing at the new place.

Saving and relocating initiative of a plant needs great devotion to it first. The process is highly simple but technical.
With the all the failures and success, it can be concluded that the endless effort of saving and relocating a ecology is “Tough But Not Impossible”

I live in a beautiful island of Jamaica, a land of breath-taking nature surrounded by crystal-clear Caribbean waters.

It is painful to see how some inhabitants of the island are totally unaware of environmental health as they pollute the land by excessive littering.

I had a volunteering experience in cleaning one of the beaches in Portmore, St. Catherine and among other volunteers we have collected a lot of waste products from the beach. Even after long hours on a pretty hot sun there was still a lot of work left as the amount that waste was absolutely enormous.

The reason why all that garbage such as disposed household items, food packaging, personal items ends up on the beach is because of inappropriate disposal, for example, some people discard lunch boxes not in a garbage bin but exactly where they had that lunch, that is on the ground or sand, they also throw away consumables in the gullies that run through the island. Together with water, the incorrectly disposed consumables are being carried out from the gullies into the sea and subsequently sink on the sea floor or end up on the beaches.

I was glad to see not only adults but also school children volunteering to the cleaning of the beach as they will definitely remember that one’s negligent lifestyle causes many, inclusive of themselves, to work hard after and that if they will behave the same way as those people who pollute the land it will cause significant damage to the environment.

I want all the people to understand harmful consequences of pollution and be strongly disciplined and care for the land they live on and they claim they also love.

To prevent littering the country needs to implement a more detailed and strict system of fines for littering, raise the public awareness of environmental health and protection through various campaigns and, of course, to improve the recycling and waste management system so that the fight against littering will transform into everyone’s lifestyle.

Saludos.

My little way in helping the environment is to report water leakages in the street and conserving water when using it in my daily household chores. Also, throwing garbage in the inappropriate places. I will teach little children to care and be part of saving the water and the environment. It may not be as noble as the other people can contribute but I can see it as a broom stick small and thin but when was tied together it could clean well and reach even the unreachable side.

I want to tell that everyone can do something to save the earth. I cannot travel around, so I choose to work as an online volunteer for two environmental magazines, one national and one international. I translate and re-write stories on environmental protection throughtout the world into Vietnamese. I hope these would help to improve the awareness of my people on protecting our common planet.

My name is Gina Rosario, I'm 21 years old and I am from the Dominican Republic. Since 2005, I've been volunteering in my country in several community projects and other initiatives, specially promoting the values of the United Nations in my country, creating environmental conscience among Dominican kids and teenagers, developing leadership, etc. At the present time, I'm the founder and group leader of "Green Hope DR", a youth environmental project which main goal is to implement environmental education in the youth of the Dominican Republic.

As a volunteer and as a young person, I've had the opportunity to be empowered and contribute to face the challenges affecting development nowadays. Being a volunteer is definitely a rewarding experience.
