Managing a HIV and AIDS Response Programme in Botswana

Written by  Guest

Working as a development worker and international volunteer, I have provided outstanding leadership performance in both start up and turnaround efforts providing project management, financial and technical support and expertise to staff, executives and board members of local NGOs I worked with.

I am currently managing a £480,814 multi-sectoral area based HIV and AIDS Response Programme in Botswana which provides accelerated community based interventions for HIV patients. I am responsible in the management of funds ensuring proper disbursement, accounting and reporting in accordance to the approved budget plan and in compliance with the donor requirements. I am also in charge of the administration of day-to-day activities of the two community centers that I have established in two different districts. This includes close supervision of the district staff as well as the implementation of project activities.

During my first year of implementation, I have managed to build new partnerships through joint collaboration of project activities with local NGOs, government departments and community based organizations in the two districts. The programme is part of a portfolio project implemented in five countries in Southern Africa. This gave me an opportunity to also network at the international level.

Prior to my Botswana placement under the Skillshare International, I was a volunteer in Vanuatu, South Pacific for more than 2 years under the Voluntary Service Overseas. I have worked in 3 placements: as Media Project Coordinator for Transparency International, Organizational Development and Media Adviser for Media Association of Vanuatu and National Volunteering Adviser for VSO Vanuatu.

My volunteering experience for the past 5 years is a testament of my commitment in serving the community. As an international development worker volunteer, my major task is to build capacity of my local counterpart and other staff as well as to build the organizational capacity in all aspects of project management and organizational development. By sharing my skills, I have changed the lives of many people I worked with during my placements.
