Owing to the clarion call by the Executive Secretary Ms Flavia to the global UNVs sometimes in 2009 to volunteer and contribute to the Global Climate Change which International Community also during the Copenhagen summit deliberated in search of solutions.
Inspired by this call and especially considering the background of the country (Sudan) which I was serving as a volunteer, I initiated an idea whereby some kilos of a plant seeds grown in my house yard in Nigeria were taken to Sudan.
I consulted with some forest and environmentalist as to the viability and sustainability of the tree planting project initiative. A trial session was carried out and it was successful (the seed germinated).
A stakeholders meeting comprising refugee community leaders, local community, host government, school teachers in the refugee camps, water and sanitation NGOs in the camps etc were held and strategies were mapped out that gave rise to a successful tree planting event in the open desert of the eastern Sudan refugee camps: http://www.unv.org/en/news-resources/news/doc/planting-trees-for-shade.html; http://www.ng.undp.org/unv/titus_success_story.shtml
