I would not be who I am without my community, therefore I must give back to others freely. The rewards of volunteering always outweigh the efforts. I have volunteered at home in Canada, and abroad, in countries such as Haiti, Brazil and Switzerland. Every experience has brought me a sense of purpose and a wealth of knowledge that is invaluable. As a great Canadian once said: "To live a lot, you gotta give a lot. To give a lot, you gotta be part of." The only way to know is to do. So volunteer. It will change your life.

Being a volunteer in Haiti one month after the devastating earthquake of 2010 was a life changing experience. Seeing how grateful Haitians were by people coming from afar to give their time, work and love was deeply moving. It was incredible to see hope rising in their eyes while receiving assistance. May this hope not fail, as Haiti receive a continuous and consistent assistance, able to reconstruct and sustainably develop the nation.
My assignment as an UNV to Afghanistan was one of the most unique experiences of my life. Answering the needs of Natural Disaster induced IDPs and Natural Disaster affected people gave a greater meaning to this very challenging assignment. I won’t forget my Afghans colleagues, who showed me an unknown face of Afghanistan, reminding them gives me hope for a future with peace.

Situated in a small region on the island of La Gonave, Haiti, I'm helping to build water systems that can provide the local communities with treated drinking water, something highly coveted and hard to come by as the Haitian government does little for these communities. To strengthen the project, we are encouraging the local neighborhood committee to oversee the entire project, including managing the construction and budget, making it truly grassroots development.
I have been in Ethiopia, working as a volunteer for orphelins, in Tanzania contibuting in different programs for health care, informing local people about AIDA and malaria, and representing MDM Greece as Administrator/Logisticien in Haiti, for 1,5 month (Mars/April 2010) in order to organise mobile clinics around Port au Prince. I hope, I'll get involved in a new mission, soon. Skevi NIKOLAKI/Athens-GREECE
In 2003, I was a volunteer for the Sister Cities Program in Havana, Cuba. In 2009, I was a volunteer librarian in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. In 2011, I was a short-term missionary in Jacmel, Haiti. All experiences taught me lessons about life, happiness, and helping our fellow man. A magazine article I wrote resulted in at least one child in Haiti finding a sponsor. That child now goes to school and has one hot meal everyday.
