Hi, I am khalid jan 26years old male from Pakistan. i have been working with MALC in Pakistan,www.malc.org.pk since 2006.

I worked volunteerly in 2010 worst floods of Pakistan,s history with many people and communities during that hard times. our organization is working on health and community development since 1956. During the flood times i went to Germany to help our donor/partner organization i.e DAHW(www.dahw.de) to raise funds from people in Germany. i also succeed in that and the response from German people whether that were university students, primary students, old citizens, young communities and volunteers and also the German government was very good and positive. Even the small kids who didn,t know about Pakistan but they knew it through me and also due to floods. Now the families we supported and worked with since two years are very happy and satisfied and are living in flood proof houses.

I am also satisfied that i did something good in life.

Every once in a while, there comes a time in a man's life when he steps out of the rut ¬¬to reflect on the life that he has lived; to take stock of the priorities and goals, achievements and failures, the hits and the misses – a review, and at times reassessment, of life's trajectory, and the meaning and purpose of it all. However, more often than not, a catalyst is required to induce this reflection – erroneously labelled by brain sharks as 'mid-life crisis'. The opportunity to be a part of the national United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme proved to be that catalyst. Having been a professional for over half a decade, I had become excessively job-oriented, letting my dreams of pursuing a PhD and becoming a professor fade way. The fiery idealism of youth and the spirit and desire to 'give (back) to society', too, was a distant memory.

Irene was a torrential devil. Raging, brown, muddy rivers knocked buildings off their foundations, swept away bridges, eroded roads, and forced hundreds of residents out of their homes. I volunteer with the Red Cross Chapter in Athens, Georgia. However, unlike other volunteers deployed to Vermont, I knew the state well. My wife’s ancestors helped settle the village of Fairfax prior to the Revolutionary War. They were a hard scrabble, thin horse, and wooden pitchfork clan, and many of my wife’s relatives still live in the area. We spend our summers with children and grandchildren in nearby Saint Albans Bay. And I, a sporadic and rather klutzy, trout fisherman, have waded many of the once pristine and rippling rivers which were now raging and ripping.
