The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme in Venezuela, to celebrate the International Volunteer Day (IVD), commemorated annually on 5th December around the world, organized an activity in two educational institutions in order to raise awareness among students, teachers and professors about the importance of participating in the global survey My World 2015.
It was a great occasion to demonstrate that volunteerism is very effective in motivating and mobilizing communities, and that it is an excellent resource to engage citizens on the importance their opinions have in relation to the problems we face. The activity began with a presentation of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme: What is the
UNV programme?, Who are the UN Volunteers?, UNV programme in Venezuela, the Online Volunteering service. The UN Volunteers shared their experiences as Volunteers with participants. Then, the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator made a presentation of the different agencies, programmes and funds that make up the United Nations System in the country; the Millennium Development Goals, and the global survey My World 2015. Additionally, the UN Volunteers provided guidance and support to students, teachers and professors on how to fill in the offline surveys.
To complement this activity the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme gave the participants informational and educational materials collected from various UN agencies,
programmes and funds present in the country. This initiative was carried out in the "Escuela Fundación Carlos Delfino" located in La Vega, and the "Unidad Educativa
Nacional Miguel Angel López Cárdenas", in Propatria, both in Caracas. It involved a total of 148 students, teachers and professors, who selected the six priority areas of sixteen
possible issues contained in the survey. UNV registered at the official partner’s MY World portal, and recorded the data obtained. MY World will continue gathering people´s voices up to 2015 and results will be shared with the Secretary General and global leaders as they prepare the next development agenda in the run up to 2015.
