IVD in Liberia: a special ceremony, sports event and clean up activitiesWritten by Cristina
We held a very successful IVD event at YMCA Conference Hall, Monrovia. The Ministry of Youth and Sports, United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) and all other Volunteers Involving Organisations (VIO) and Youth Groups organized the event.
The event was graced by all dignitaries including Mr. Eugene Nagbe, Honb’le Minister, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr. Tamrat Samuel, His Excellency Officer-in-Charge, SRSG, UNMIL, Mr. Cleophas Torori, Deputy Country Director (Programmes), UNDP, Mr. Beyan Harris, President, National Youth Council, YMCA, Liberia and other dignitaries. The event achieved the spirits of volunteerism especially for youth’s involvement and active participation. The program was fully participated by Volunteers Involving Organisations (VIOs), different organizations, UN agencies, youth forums, government counterparts, UN Volunteers etc.
The event included the discussions from dignitaries, reading statements from UNV Executive Director, UNDP Administrator and UN Secretary General, photo exhibitions of ‘Youth in Actions’, ‘community clean-up contest’ & Art works drawn by children. It also arranged a musical show.The speakers underscored the contribution of voluntary actions especially from youth groups in advancing development process in Liberia.
As a part of celebration of IVD-2013, UNV Field Unit Liberia also organized a sports event on Saturday, December 07, 2013, which was held at Don Bosco Youth Center, Matadi, Monrovia. The activities included many popular sports like football, volleyball, basketball and kickball. It was fantastic! It was full of spirit with youth participation from UNV, Volunteer Involving Organizations (VIOs), Youth groups, CSOs, and other stakeholders. The event mobilized handful youth groups notably and it would indeed contribute increasing their engagement in volunteering activities in a cohesive manner. More than two hundred people participated in yesterday’s sports event.
It was organized as well a community clean up activity. This was done with youth partners mobilizing youth leaders in selected communities to promote clean and safe environment in their communities.
