UNV Kenya joins volunteer community to celebrate IVD in KenyaWritten by Cristina
On 5 December, International Volunteer Day was celebrated worldwide. In Kenya UN Volunteers joined the Volunteer community to mark the day at the Hope Worldwide Centre at Nairobi’s Mukuru Kwa Ruben Slum. The event attracted over 400 people from volunteer involving organizations that included, among others, AMREF Kenya, Kenya Red Cross, Progressive Volunteers ,The President’s Award Kenya, World Youth Alliance and Hope Worldwide.
A number of activities dedicated to the day and to the slum children involved tree planting, cleaning classrooms and sharing light moments. Dr. Tapiwa Kamuruko, UNV Regional Manager for Africa delivered messages from the UNV Executive Coordinator Richard Dictus and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Mr. Thomas Ngumi, a representative from Kenya’s Ministry of Labor also attended the activity and delivered a message from the Ministry’s Cabinet Secretary.
The Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Labor used this occasion to express its appreciation for the support from UNDP and UNV towards the development of the National Volunteer policy which is expected to come into effect in January 2015. Mr. Ngumi expressed the Government’s commitment to ensure that the national policy document is taken through all the processes including the national validation process and the bills to be passed in parliament. The message conveyed that the Kenyan Government is placing an emphasis on recognizing and budgeting for volunteerism, and commemorating IVD countrywide come next year.
