IVD2014 event in Bonn

On Friday, 5 December, International Volunteer Day 2014 was officially celebrated in Bonn and included: a photo exhibit, engagement with the city’s Volunteer Agency, a “Knowledge Café” with representatives from international NGOs and a reception at city hall. Moreover, on the same day, a group of UNV staff members helped to refurbish rooms at the Elisabeth Selbert Integrated School in Bonn.

The Langer Eugen building at the UN Campus played host to a photo exhibit showcasing volunteers in action from all over the world. Additionally, the United Nations Volunteers Programme was proud to welcome representatives from the Volunteer Agency of the City of Bonn (Freiwilligenagentur) where they were able to inform UN employees about a variety of exciting opportunities to get involved in the local community. In addition to learning about these opportunities, staff were able to commit to volunteering actions in the city and have them visually represented on an interactive pin board.

UNV hosted the “Knowledge Café” and welcomed Dr. Marion Karmann, Monitoring and Evaluation Program Manager at the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), Ms. Louise Baker, Coordinator of External Relations and Policy at the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and Francesco Galtieri, UNV Chief of Peace Programming for a discussion on the importance of citizen engagement. The conversation covered the perspective of international organizations in the City of Bonn on the role of volunteers in addressing development challenges, opportunities and inclusive participation in development policy and practice. In typical Knowledge Café style, the audience was able to engage in the discussion and support, reinforce or challenge the ideas being presented.
