Kos VolunteersKos is a small island in the Aegean sea. In 2015 about 55.000 Refguees landed on its shores. A group of local and international volunteers appears to be among the main provider of humanitarian aid, supporting Greek institutions, UNHCR and other organization. On Saturday, 5th December, on the occasion of the International Volunteer Day, more than 50 volunteers from different nationalities bonded together and cleaned up the shore of Kos town. Volunteers focused in the port and in the area of Lambi, where they managed to clean the shore completely, removing thousands of life jackets and even small inflatable boats. Gloves and bags were distributed to the participants, while a specially branded T-shirt commemorating the event was also provided. After the cleaning campaign all volunteers were invited by Mercy Corps at Boomerang. UNHCR, Samaritan's Purse, IOM and other organizations which provided technical support to the event, would like to express their gratitude to all the Kosian and international volunteers who, with great dedication, worked incessantly and managed to support thousands of refugees in the recent months, making Kos an example of humanitarianism and 'people to people' help.

- Geoff Prewitt, Chief of the Development Programming Section (UNV Bonn) and Zelimir Mijic (UNV FU representative) participated in a number of events during the week of IVD in Bosnia and Herzegovina - both in Sarajevo and Banja Luka, Republic of Srpska. With UN Volunteer colleagues, we supported working with people with disabilities, street cleaning drives and other. We also participated in a wonderful volunteer gallery walk (Sarajevo) and Annual Volunteer Award Ceremony (Banja Luka). What a wonderful spirit of volunteerism that was shown - from all ages and genders and backgrounds - truly universal!
Bicharo Gure”Work doesn’t know if you are male or female! Can I replace a wheel single handedly? Check. Can I drive a truck? Check! . . . When I was young, my father did not want me to go to school. I did my high school studies in hiding, with my mother’s help. I wanted to learn a new skill that I knew was going to help me in my life afterwards. Volunteering as a mechanic is a dream come true.” Bicharo Gure (Kenya), UN Volunteer Mechanic in the Democratic Republic of Congo

- Being a volunteer means being one of the strategic players in partnership capacity building process around the globe, with a special taste of effort, different from the waged job. Being a volunteer, is a purification of the humanbeing spirit toward a noble goal which is peace for development and rooted equality for all.

INternational Volunteer Day (IVD) 2015
On December 5th, International Volunteer Day, we not only celebrate volunteerism in all its facets - but also pay special tribute to volunteers working to implement the new global goals. Through volunteerism the person can impact the sustainable development agenda by mobilizing and engaging governments and communities. For IVD 2015 join us in recognizing the individuals who are engaged in volunteering their time, energies, and skills to change the world for a better future.
In this year’s IVD campaign you will see questions such as “Are you part of the change?”, “Will you take the challenge?“, “Are you ready?” and their answers, as thousands of individuals show how their volunteering is making a contribution and bring to light how volunteering is invaluable in making the world a better place.
Join us by posting your selfie here or on social media tagged with #IVD2015selfie and stories before and on 5 December 2015, filling the map to show how volunteering makes the difference in the Global Goals..
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
“As we seek to build capacities and to help the new agenda to take root, volunteerism can be another powerful and cross-cutting means of implementation. Volunteerism can help to expand and mobilize constituencies and to engage people in national planning and implementation for sustainable development goals. And volunteer groups can help to localize the new agenda by providing new areas of interaction between Governments and people for concrete and scalable actions.”
